Workshop on Unmad's cartoon course

One day I got surprised and happy to receive a message on FB. It was from cartoonist Tanmoy inviting me to join Unmad's cartoon workshop. I got so excited because it was my long time wish to learn sketching as drawing figures was my passion as a child. When I was a young girl or when I learned to enjoy drawing around the age of 11 or 12 I used to sketch a lot and all those were women figures wearing different kinds of outfits mostly western like gowns, formal wears like tops, skirts etc. I was so addicted that I often found myself sketching on any blank piece of paper I got around me also on my books, notebooks. It kind of affected my studies because I would do sketching rather than my assignments. I got lot of discouragement from family on this. However, there came a time when I had to stop sketching due to study pressure. I guess I sketched till my first year. I didn't know what made me sketch only women figures. It was my hobby and I was so passionate about it. The figures I drew also had story that I made on my mind spontaneously on the spur of the moment and as if those figures were characters interacting with each other. I would cut all my women figures and play with them like dolls. I remember I loved watching beauty pageants and I guess it gave me lot of inspirations. I had no formal training on drawing neither did I ever thought about studying sketching I just did this for my own recreation.

I was not able to pursue it due to academics pressure and discouragement from my parents. Since now I am web designer by profession, I am extremely fascinated by various creative artworks, whether it’s a digital or traditional painting, a sculpture, an animation or music video.

Okay enough about passion now let's go back to the main topic. So when I knew Unmad’s was gonna conduct the course, I called them right away to know their enrollment procedure etc. Then finally got enrolled. The cl-assess held on weekends so it was quite hectic for me but I think it was worth attending such class and learning from top cartoonists in our country. On my first day I was kind of cool and relaxed but as day passed I was bit nervous because they were kind of strict and would tell you on the face if your assignment doesn’t seem okay. It was really nice to meet and get inspired by Mr Ahsan Habib, one of the living creative legend in Bangladesh. Our main tutor was Mehedi Haque, executive editor of Unmad magazine. He is such a sincere and inspiring teacher. I learned a lot from him and I also bought his book on drawing. Mr Anik Khan was there too, he took our class on how to generate ideas. It was just awesome to meet such humble writer. Another interesting persona was Mr. Shobboshachy Mistry, who is currently greatest concept artist in our country. He was super strict but he comoletely rocks, a very strict and good teacher. Cartoonist Tanmoy was there for sometime to teach us about expressions and he was so good at it. So overall it was really great fun and learning experience at Unmad's Workshop.

Below is a picture of my last day at the workshop when I was given a certificate.

It was an honor to receive certificate from Mr. Ahsan Habib and take a photo with Unmad's team namely, from left Mitu, Ahsan Habib, Mehedi Haque and yours truly :) . Photo credit goes to Abhiram Roy.

My first test Flash based App for Android

I always had this interest on developing apps/contents for mobile or touchscreen devices but I just didn't get the opportunity. Now with the pre-release of AIR for Android and by watching so many nice flash games/animations on android devices, I just can't wait to try one. So I tried with few of my existing flash animations(done in cs3). And it looked/worked so nice on the emulator and the device (I used Motorola Droid).

Here are quick steps:

1. Install Flash CS5.5

2 Get the Android SDK

Download it from the official site for Android SDK

3. Get AIR runtime for Device (Froyo 2.2)

Connect the device to your pc and install the USB 3.0 driver. Locate the device using the SDK, it will list the device and then install the AIR Runtime.

4. Get AIR for Android extension for flash

Install this using the CS5 extension manager. Start flash and create new from template, select "AIR for android". Put your existing flash content on this new file, you can increase the stage size. It accepts only AS3 files.

* The extension comes with Flash CS5.5 so just skip step 4.

Go to file > Android Settings >

In the General tab > fill up the necessary info.
In Deployment tab > create certificate, put password, for deployment type select > debug

Under after publishing area, select both the check boxes.

For the path to adb, choose the tools directory of your SDK folder.

Click "Publish"

Your app will automatically load on the device.

*Make sure your device has "USB debugging enabled"
*Make sure the usb driver was properly installed on your pc.

(I will write these things in details later)

set auto focus on input textbox AS2

Selection.setFocus('inputName')

SCORM

Recently I had this wonderful opportunity to work with SCORM conformant e-learning project. Actually it’s been long since I have been developing flash based automated tutorials or quizzes. But they weren’t meant for online course rather they were just online/CD training materials for users of our web-based application. This time one of our users wanted to integrate these tutorials with their Learning Management System, so she asked us if our materials are SCORM conformant or not. The term SCORM was new to me and I didn’t know where to start. So my team leader and I began researching on that and he gave me lot of helpful resources or links. He helped me on making the manifest file and I figured out how to continue with the rest of the process.

SCORM stands for Sharable Content Object Reference Model – it is set of technical methodology for e-learning software products. SCORM specifies the instructions to be put on e-learning software which can easily communicate with the Learning Management Systems (LMSs). SCORM is the e-learning standard for packaging, launching, bookmarking and tracking a course

SCORM specifies that content should:
• Be packaged in a ZIP file.
• Be described in an XML file.
• Communicate via JavaScript.
• Sequence using rules in XML.

It was actually very easy scripting, so after checking few online examples I figured out how to code it. Our SCORM conformant training materials tracks bookmarking, score and completion of the course. The course status can be tracked by both the teacher and learner.

Here are the basic steps for creating SCORM content in flash:

1. Download the javascript api APIWrapper.js ( you will find it in the ADL site http://www.adlnet.gov
     /Pages/Default.aspx
)

2. Download Manifest Maker for ADL SCORM extension for Dreamweaver and install it using Adobe Extension
    Manager.

3. Create the flash file (containing the course). In order to communicate with the javascript wrapper, the following functions are used, a) Initialize (to call the doLMSInitialize function in javascript, which makes the connection with LMS)
b) Set values (set or pass values from the flash file, for example, setting bookmark)
c) Get values (get or retrieve values from the LMS, for example, getting the last saved bookmarked location)

4. Using Dreamweaver, Create one html file as holder for the flash swf file. So embed the swf file and  Include the javasscript file.

5.  Then define site. And make manifest by clicking on  Commands > Manifest maker. It will generate several files.

6. Open the  imsmanifest.xml file just to check the contents or if you want to change page title etc.

7.  Make the package or zip file. Select all files and right click then select "send to > compressed format"

8. Upload this package in SCORM cloud to test.

It was whole new and exciting learning experience for me. There are few links or sites which were really helpful, like:
